Curated quirkiness
Located on Broad Street, one of the busiest streets of Richmond, Virginia, the Quirk Hotel sprouted in September of 2015. It was housed inside of a 1916 J.B. Mosby and Co. luxury dry goods store with a total of 59,425 square feet divided in nine floors and originally designed in Italian Renaissance style.
With one of the bests views of Downtown Richmond, the Quirk Hotel emerged as a pioneer in the boutique-hotel scene in Virginia's capital city. The quirky retreat offers 70 rooms —four of them penthouses—, a coffee bar with locally roasted beans, a curated shop and art gallery (owned and operated by the hotel owner Katie Ukrop), a stunning rooftop bar and the innovative restaurant and bar Maple & Pine, led by executive chef David Dunlap.
The full-service design firm based in Richmond, 3north, carefully preserved the original structure using State and Federal historic tax credits and re-designed the interior of the building letting its original features shine. For that, the firm won the 2016 GRACRE Hospitality Project of the Year award and the 2016 Richmond IMPACT Award, amongst others. Connecticut firm POESIS design was commissioned to design the hotel's interior and create custom furniture. Their work resulted in being shortlisted for the "Hotel Under 200 Rooms" award in the 2017 International Hotel and Property Awards for their brilliant job.
The courtyard
The courtyard at the Quirk Hotel has access from the lobby and the Quirk Gallery/Shop, and can hold up to 80 seated people. It is an eclectic space surrounded by painted brick walls and a glass facade that opens up to the rooftop allowing natural light to fill in and reflect all around. This modern, yet cozy, courtyard has the makings for a great venue for small events, intimate concerts, or suppers.
For those who want to not only enjoy the delicious dishes of Maple & Pine, but experience the hotel rooms too, the penthouse rooms are a great choice. Minimal and clean-lined, the rooms have an artsy, modern, pink theme and combine reclaimed wood furniture (using the original pine floors) with contemporary elements. Pastel tones, original floors, spacious bathrooms, original art and a generously sized private rooftop patio are some of the attractive features that the Terrace King guest room have to offer.
Only five minutes away from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and only 10 from the emblematic shopping neighborhood, Carytown, the Quirk Hotel is a great enclave situated in the West Broad Street area within walking distance to art galleries, boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants (don't miss the acclaimed Italian Graffiato next-door, by awarded chef Mike Isabella) .
Named one of the "Top 60 Best New Hotels and Resorts in the World" on the 2016 Condé Nast Traveler The Hot List, and "#13 in Top Hotels in the American South" by Conde Nast's 2016 Reader's Choice Awards, the Quirk Hotel (and especially, its rooftop!) keeps accumulating awards and attracting more visitors and locals.
